What Is Rhinophyma?
Sometimes, severe cases of rosacea, a chronic inflammatory skin condition, can lead to a skin disorder known as rhinophyma. Rhinophyma is a rare skin disorder caused by an overgrowth of the soft tissue of the nose. Rhinophyma presents as a large mass on the end of the nose with red bumps. This can lead to the nose becoming larger, disfigured, and asymmetrical. Rhinophyma is more common in men than women and occurs more frequently in patients 35 – 60 years old. How Is Rhinophyma Treated?
At Sandhu Dermatology & Med Spa, we offer advanced treatments, like electrosurgery and laser therapy, to treat rhinophyma. When you come in for treatment, you will be brought into a private treatment room to be prepped for your treatment. You will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area and help you relax. Once your treatment begins, a curette will be used to debulk and remove the unwanted tissue. Next, we will restore the natural contours of the nose by smoothing the curves with an electrocautery. Finally, a laser will be used to smooth the skin and shape the nose. Treatment time will vary for each patient, depending on how much tissue requires removal.
What Are the Symptoms of Rhinophyma?
Serious cases of rosacea can often lead to rhinophyma. The signs of rhinophyma can occur in cycles and become increasingly more severe if left untreated. Symptoms of rhinophyma that affect the nose are:
- Reddish skin color
- Waxy, rough, yellowish surface
- Thickened skin
- Enlarged pores
- Several visible oil glands
- Gradual changes to the appearance of the nose
- Nose has a swollen, bulbous shape

This is a great dermatologist. Highly recommended. I had 2 moles removed by Dr. Sandhu, and he did a fantastic job, especially for both moles being on my head. I also received 2 separate courtesy calls from his office to check if the healing of them were going well. If I ever have a similar need I will definitely be going back to him.
