What Are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are similar to spider veins; however, they are deeper and are a more serious condition. Varicose veins are typically thick, ropey veins that branch off and become visible through the skin. This condition most commonly occurs on the legs and most frequently in women. These cord-like veins may be red, blue, or flesh-colored and can be physically and aesthetically challenging. Varicose veins can cause pain, swelling, heaviness, restlessness, and even ulcers. At Sandhu Dermatology & Med Spa, we offer nonsurgical laser vein removal for patients in and around West Palmdale, Ridgecrest, and Tehachapi, CA to decrease the appearance of veins on the face and body. In your private consultation, we will create a customized plan based on your unique needs and use advanced technology, like Nd:YAG laser and sclerotherapy, to help you reach your goals.
How Are Varicose Veins Treated?
Nonsurgical vein removal sessions are performed in our West Palmdale, Ridgecrest, and Tehachapi, CA practices as an outpatient procedure in around 20 – 40 minutes, depending on the number of areas being addressed. During laser vein reduction, you will be asked to lie comfortably in one of our treatment rooms as the affected area is cleaned and prepared. A topical anesthetic can be used before the treatment to reduce any potential discomfort. The handheld laser device is passed across the skin so the energy can target the varicose veins through a series of pulses without affecting the rest of the body. The abnormal blood vessel absorbs the laser energy, which collapses and closes the vessel wall. Sclerotherapy treatments can be completed in one of our treatment rooms within a short time and with no anesthesia. The veins to be treated will be identified, and the skin will be sanitized with alcohol. A fine-gauge needle will be inserted into the vein, and the sclerosing solution will be applied. The needle will be removed, and a bandage will cover the site of injection to stop any bleeding. This procedure can be repeated to treat all necessary veins. You will be allowed to leave our office as soon as you feel comfortable to resume your regular day.
What Are the Symptoms of Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins often appear as swollen, twisted veins near the skin's surface. These veins can cause discomfort in patients and result in various other symptoms, such as:
- Swelling in the legs
- Skin discoloration near the affected veins
- Aching or throbbing pain
- Heaviness in the legs
- Itching around the vein
Sandhu Dermatology & Med Spa Reviews
I am so happy that I went to Shandu Dermatology!Dr Harika Shandu is an excellent surgeon with outstanding attention to detail. Her stitchwork is so beautiful that it reminds me of fine embroidery on a silk cloth. She's that good!I had what looked like two pimples on my back, but they were just the tip of the iceberg. I heard a "snip snip" , it felt like a haircut, and when she was done, a non-cancerous cyst - the size of my thumb! - was removed from my back and placed in a medical jar. I was shocked! I had no idea! The second cyst was the size of a marble, and a third cyst, located on my left forearm, which I thought was a weird looking mole, but no, no, no - it was a cyst the size of a 1-inch ball bearing! My jaw dropped in disbelief.Because Dr Hakita Shandu did such an excellent job sewing me up, my wounds have closed completely now and there is no scarring. There is still some discoloration around the wounds, but I plan on buying the Post Care Silicone Gel when I go back next week for a follow-up appointment.I’m also seriously considering the monthly subscription for a hydro facial. It sounds wonderful and very relaxing.Dr Hakita Shandu is a very nice person with a gentle touch. I would strongly recommend Shandu Dermatology for any skin care needs. The entire staff is very nice, and they made me feel very much at ease. It’s like the tv show Cheers! - “where everyone knows your name”Thank you very much, Dr Hakita Shandu! You're the best!Morris Lee FeasterPalmdale, CA

The girls are terrified, very professional
I had my procedure today with Ashley and Dr. Sandhu, I felt NOTHING. Not even the syringe that Ashley used to numb me before the full removal of my mole. Ashley made sure I was comfortable and was able to talk me through the prep process. Dr. Sandhu was so quick with the procedure I couldn’t even think to feel anything. I am still going to get a biopsy and 6 week follow up. But I am highly satisfied with the progress. I did peak under my bandaid and I’m glad to no longer see an abnormal mole! Thank you Dr. Sandhu and team!_______________________________________________I had my first mole check-up with Dr. Sandhu and Amanda, and I was truly impressed by the entire experience. From start to finish, the appointment process was smooth and easy. Both Dr. Sandhu and Amanda were professional, kind, and extremely knowledgeable, which helped put me at ease right away.Unfortunately, the mole in question appeared abnormal, so I have a follow-up appointment scheduled for a shave and biopsy. While I’m definitely hoping and praying for a benign result, I feel confident knowing I’m in such capable hands. As a cash patient, I also really appreciated the clear and reasonable pricing—no surprises, just honest care. I’m very grateful for their support and would absolutely recommend them to anyone looking for attentive and thorough dermatologic care.

Varicose Veins FAQ
Is laser vein removal painful?
Before your treatment, we typically will apply an ointment or local anesthetic to numb the area. Most patients feel a tingling or snap when the laser focuses on the target. Most laser systems on the market, including the one our practice uses, have a built-in feature that provides a cooling effect. This minimizes discomfort while also preventing the laser from getting too hot, which may result in damage to your skin.
Can exercise help prevent varicose veins?
Yes, regular exercise helps improve blood flow and strengthens the muscles that support healthy circulation. Activities like walking, swimming, or cycling can reduce your risk of developing varicose veins and help manage symptoms if you already have them.
Can varicose veins come back after treatment?
While treated veins typically do not return, you may develop new varicose veins over time, especially if you have certain risk factors. Following preventive tips, like maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, and avoiding prolonged standing, can help reduce your risk of recurrence.
