Eczema in West Palmdale, CA

Eczema is a term for a series of skin conditions brought on by different allergic reactions, or at times, from the body's response to a weak immune system. The outcome can result in skin redness, discoloration, and itchy patches similar to dermatitis. Often, the redness itself is dermatitis. This can happen anywhere on your body, including the hands, face, neck, or other regions. Atopic dermatitis is the most common type and is generally the consequence of an allergic reaction. This condition typically starts in childhood. At Sandhu Dermatology & Med Spa, with locations in West Palmdale, Ridgecrest, and Tehachapi, CA, we will attempt to diagnose exactly what is causing the inflammation so that an accurate treatment program can be created and carried out.

Eczema can be addressed with a range of over-the-counter or prescribed medications and ointments. Hydrocortisone ointments and creams and antihistamines, such as Benadryl®, can be bought to help relieve symptoms. Prescription drugs, like immunomodulators or steroid creams, can help if you have severe eczema. An oral steroid or corticosteroid may also be prescribed. In severe conditions, ultraviolet light therapy or laser therapy may also be used on the affected regions. When other options have failed, immunosuppressants could be prescribed since these medications suppress the immune system.

Eczema spots may appear anywhere but largely happen on the face, neck, legs, or hands. With children, patches can appear on the inner creases of their knees and elbows. Eczema is most commonly characterized by:

  • Red, dry, or itchy skin
  • Chronically itchy, dry, or thickened patches of skin
  • Persistent rashes

Once the skin is scratched, dry spots and open sores with scabs can develop and may become infected. Severe symptoms could include pus-filled blisters or a yellowish to light brown crust growing over existing eczema patches, which may indicate a bacterial infection.

I am so happy that I went to Shandu Dermatology!Dr Harika Shandu is an excellent surgeon with outstanding attention to detail. Her stitchwork is so beautiful that it reminds me of fine embroidery on a silk cloth. She's that good!I had what looked like two pimples on my back, but they were just the tip of the iceberg. I heard a "snip snip" , it felt like a haircut, and when she was done, a non-cancerous cyst - the size of my thumb! - was removed from my back and placed in a medical jar. I was shocked! I had no idea! The second cyst was the size of a marble, and a third cyst, located on my left forearm, which I thought was a weird looking mole, but no, no, no - it was a cyst the size of a 1-inch ball bearing! My jaw dropped in disbelief.Because Dr Hakita Shandu did such an excellent job sewing me up, my wounds have closed completely now and there is no scarring. There is still some discoloration around the wounds, but I plan on buying the Post Care Silicone Gel when I go back next week for a follow-up appointment.I’m also seriously considering the monthly subscription for a hydro facial. It sounds wonderful and very relaxing.Dr Hakita Shandu is a very nice person with a gentle touch. I would strongly recommend Shandu Dermatology for any skin care needs. The entire staff is very nice, and they made me feel very much at ease. It’s like the tv show Cheers! - “where everyone knows your name”Thank you very much, Dr Hakita Shandu! You're the best!Morris Lee FeasterPalmdale, CA

I had my procedure today with Ashley and Dr. Sandhu, I felt NOTHING. Not even the syringe that Ashley used to numb me before the full removal of my mole. Ashley made sure I was comfortable and was able to talk me through the prep process. Dr. Sandhu was so quick with the procedure I couldn’t even think to feel anything. I am still going to get a biopsy and 6 week follow up. But I am highly satisfied with the progress. I did peak under my bandaid and I’m glad to no longer see an abnormal mole! Thank you Dr. Sandhu and team!_______________________________________________I had my first mole check-up with Dr. Sandhu and Amanda, and I was truly impressed by the entire experience. From start to finish, the appointment process was smooth and easy. Both Dr. Sandhu and Amanda were professional, kind, and extremely knowledgeable, which helped put me at ease right away.Unfortunately, the mole in question appeared abnormal, so I have a follow-up appointment scheduled for a shave and biopsy. While I’m definitely hoping and praying for a benign result, I feel confident knowing I’m in such capable hands. As a cash patient, I also really appreciated the clear and reasonable pricing—no surprises, just honest care. I’m very grateful for their support and would absolutely recommend them to anyone looking for attentive and thorough dermatologic care.

Doctors aren’t entirely certain what triggers eczema, but most evidence points to a combination of internal and external factors that influence how the skin reacts. Family history also plays a meaningful role because certain genes can make the skin more sensitive and more likely to respond to irritants. Individuals with relatives who have asthma or allergies often have a higher chance of developing eczema due to this inherited sensitivity.

Some of the most common causes linked to eczema include:

  • Genetic tendencies that increase skin sensitivity
  • Weak or damaged skin barrier that lets irritants penetrate
  • Immune system reactions that create ongoing inflammation
  • Environmental triggers like cold air, heat, or harsh products
  • Irritants such as fragrances, detergents, or rough fabrics
  • Environmental allergens like pollen or dust
  • Chronic inflammation that disrupts the skin’s natural balance

These factors help clarify what causes eczema and why flare-ups can be so different from one person to the next.

Risk factors for eczema include a family history of eczema, asthma, or other allergies, which can raise the chances of developing the condition. Environmental triggers like harsh soaps, allergens like dust or pet dander, and extreme temperatures may lead to eczema flare-ups. Stress, dry skin, and irritants in skincare products can also aggravate symptoms, particularly those with sensitive skin. While eczema often begins in childhood, it can persist or flare up at any stage of life.

Is eczema contagious?

No, eczema can't be passed between people. However, if you have a skin condition on one section of your body, it can affect other regions. So, it is crucial to search for solutions early on to prevent it from transferring to different areas of your skin.

What causes eczema to reoccur?

Stress and worry may lead to an eczema flare-up. Stress and anxiety can both lead to an inflammatory reaction in the body, leading to eczema. Other frequent eczema causes involve cleaning agents (such as detergents and soaps), environmental allergens, cold weather, and specific kinds of garment fabric.
