What Is Skin Cancer?
Skin cancer is a disease that occurs when skin cells grow and mutate at an abnormal rate. There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. At Sandhu Dermatology & Med Spa, our team is highly trained in diagnosing all types of skin cancer and performing advanced therapies to treat them. If you or a family member have noticed any changes in your skin or have a history of skin cancer, contact us to schedule a skin cancer evaluation at one of our practices in West Palmdale, Ridgecrest, or Tehachapi, CA. We can perform an exam to assess your skin and ease any concerns you may have.
How Is Skin Cancer Treated?
The first step to treatment is to obtain a skin evaluation and proper diagnosis. This may include blood work and a biopsy on any concerning skin lesions to determine if they are cancerous or benign. After we have completed your thorough skin evaluation and received your results, we will schedule an appointment to review them. If it is determined that you do have skin cancer, further steps for treatment can be discussed. We offer various treatments at our West Palmdale, Ridgecrest, and Tehachapi, CA practices. Your treatment will be chosen, depending on the type, location, and severity of your skin cancer. Each treatment plan is customized to your specific needs and may include one or more therapies.
What Are the Symptoms of Skin Cancer?
Self-exams can be an excellent way to stay on top of your skin health and find worrisome spots before they lead to a more concerning issue. For the early detection of skin cancer, it is essential to educate yourself on the signs and symptoms of skin cancer. Being familiar with your skin and knowing what is normal for you is important. To do this, we recommend using the ABCDE guideline, which includes:
- Asymmetry: each half of a mole or birthmark should be symmetrical or match
- Border: irregular, ragged, notched, or blurred edges need to be evaluated by a professional
- Color: different shades or colors within a spot may be cause for concern
- Diameter: areas over 6mm across need to be checked by your provider
- Evolving: if a spot changes in size, shape, or color over time, it may indicate skin cancer
Other signs of skin cancer can include:
- Wounds or sores that won't heal
- Redness or swelling
- Persistent itching, tenderness, or pain
- Pigment that spreads from a spot to surrounding tissue
