What Is Rhinophyma?
Sometimes, severe cases of rosacea, a chronic inflammatory skin condition, can lead to a skin disorder known as rhinophyma. Rhinophyma is a rare skin disorder caused by an overgrowth of the soft tissue of the nose. Rhinophyma presents as a large mass on the end of the nose with red bumps. This can lead to the nose becoming larger, disfigured, and asymmetrical. Rhinophyma is more common in men than women and occurs more frequently in patients 35 – 60 years old. At Sandhu Dermatology & Med Spa, our skilled team proudly offers therapies at our West Palmdale, Ridgecrest, and Tehachapi, CA practices to help improve the look of the nose and effectively treat rhinophyma.
How Is Rhinophyma Treated?
At Sandhu Dermatology & Med Spa, we offer advanced treatments, like electrosurgery and laser therapy, to treat rhinophyma. When you come in for treatment, you will be brought into a private treatment room to be prepped for your treatment. You will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area and help you relax. Once your treatment begins, a curette will be used to debulk and remove the unwanted tissue. Next, we will restore the natural contours of the nose by smoothing the curves with an electrocautery. Finally, a laser will be used to smooth the skin and shape the nose. Treatment time will vary for each patient, depending on how much tissue requires removal.
What Are the Symptoms of Rhinophyma?
Serious cases of rosacea can often lead to rhinophyma. The signs of rhinophyma can occur in cycles and become increasingly more severe if left untreated. Symptoms of rhinophyma that affect the nose are:
- Reddish skin color
- Waxy, rough, yellowish surface
- Thickened skin
- Enlarged pores
- Several visible oil glands
- Gradual changes to the appearance of the nose
- Nose has a swollen, bulbous shape
What Causes Rhinophyma?
Rhinophyma is most often linked to advanced or untreated rosacea, a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects the face. Over time, persistent inflammation can lead to thickened skin and an overgrowth of oil glands and connective tissue on the nose, creating the enlarged, textured appearance commonly associated with this condition. While the exact cause is not fully understood, long-standing rosacea is considered the primary trigger, and early management may help reduce progression. At Sandhu Dermatology & Med Spa in West Palmdale, CA, our team helps patients better understand how concerns like rhinophyma treatment, rosacea nose thickening, and bulbous nose condition can develop so they can explore appropriate care options.
Sandhu Dermatology & Med Spa Reviews
I am so happy that I went to Shandu Dermatology!Dr Harika Shandu is an excellent surgeon with outstanding attention to detail. Her stitchwork is so beautiful that it reminds me of fine embroidery on a silk cloth. She's that good!I had what looked like two pimples on my back, but they were just the tip of the iceberg. I heard a "snip snip" , it felt like a haircut, and when she was done, a non-cancerous cyst - the size of my thumb! - was removed from my back and placed in a medical jar. I was shocked! I had no idea! The second cyst was the size of a marble, and a third cyst, located on my left forearm, which I thought was a weird looking mole, but no, no, no - it was a cyst the size of a 1-inch ball bearing! My jaw dropped in disbelief.Because Dr Hakita Shandu did such an excellent job sewing me up, my wounds have closed completely now and there is no scarring. There is still some discoloration around the wounds, but I plan on buying the Post Care Silicone Gel when I go back next week for a follow-up appointment.I’m also seriously considering the monthly subscription for a hydro facial. It sounds wonderful and very relaxing.Dr Hakita Shandu is a very nice person with a gentle touch. I would strongly recommend Shandu Dermatology for any skin care needs. The entire staff is very nice, and they made me feel very much at ease. It’s like the tv show Cheers! - “where everyone knows your name”Thank you very much, Dr Hakita Shandu! You're the best!Morris Lee FeasterPalmdale, CA

The girls are terrified, very professional
I had my procedure today with Ashley and Dr. Sandhu, I felt NOTHING. Not even the syringe that Ashley used to numb me before the full removal of my mole. Ashley made sure I was comfortable and was able to talk me through the prep process. Dr. Sandhu was so quick with the procedure I couldn’t even think to feel anything. I am still going to get a biopsy and 6 week follow up. But I am highly satisfied with the progress. I did peak under my bandaid and I’m glad to no longer see an abnormal mole! Thank you Dr. Sandhu and team!_______________________________________________I had my first mole check-up with Dr. Sandhu and Amanda, and I was truly impressed by the entire experience. From start to finish, the appointment process was smooth and easy. Both Dr. Sandhu and Amanda were professional, kind, and extremely knowledgeable, which helped put me at ease right away.Unfortunately, the mole in question appeared abnormal, so I have a follow-up appointment scheduled for a shave and biopsy. While I’m definitely hoping and praying for a benign result, I feel confident knowing I’m in such capable hands. As a cash patient, I also really appreciated the clear and reasonable pricing—no surprises, just honest care. I’m very grateful for their support and would absolutely recommend them to anyone looking for attentive and thorough dermatologic care.

Rhinophyma FAQ
Is rhinophyma treatment painful?
Most treatments involve minimal discomfort. We use local anesthesia or sedation to help you stay comfortable during surgical or laser procedures. After treatment, some mild swelling or tenderness is normal but temporary.
Will rhinophyma return after treatment?
Treatment can successfully remove excess tissue and restore the shape of the nose, but ongoing management of rosacea is important to reduce the risk of recurrence. Our team may recommend follow-up care, including skincare products and sun protection, to help maintain your results.
When should I seek treatment for rhinophyma?
If you notice changes in the appearance or texture of your nose or are experiencing discomfort or difficulty breathing, we recommend scheduling an evaluation. Early treatment can help prevent the condition from worsening and improve your quality of life.
